They are excellent in reproduction, very reliable and good parents in dealing with the offspring. In the right conditions and with a rich and varied food, typically raise their young without any problems.
Live and reproduce well in a variety of nurseries (suspended or conventional) and accept different types and shapes of nests.
Are monomorphic (males similar to females) up to 18 or 36 months of age, which makes sexing (by analysis of blood / DNA or laparoscopy) required to establish the sex of the offspring/ young. As adults, males of all colors and mutations (with the exception of the Albino) have a distinct ring around the neck.
When adults, of a plumage always impeccable, one of the attractions of the species is to see the male displaying for female in the process of courtship. And one of the greatest pleasures (not just for the birds!) is to watch the process of mating.
Habitat:
The minimum size of conventional nursery (ground) should be 3.00 m long x 0.90 m wide x 2.20 meters tall. But nowadays we use more nurseries suspended (big cages). These must have a minimum length of 1.60 meters x 0.60 meters wide x 0.60 m height. The ideal size is somewhere around 2.20 meters long x 0.80 m wide x 1.00 meters tall.
The screen mesh pond should be 25 mm x 25 mm or 25 mm x 50 mm and the wire may be 10, 12 or 14 mm (preferably thicker).
The best perches are the timber with at least 25 mm in diameter. Should be positioned as far away from each other and further up the pond. That allows more comfort and performance for the birds. It is important that there is something in the pond for the birds to be distracted such as a Sizala rope tied to the end of a piece of eucalyptus (untreated) with plump pieces of wood hanging.
Breeding:
If you want to create a couple of parakeets Ring Neck, it is very important to transfer the couple to a separate aviary, where the disturbance is minimal. Many disorders make them very excited. If these birds enjoy enough tranquility, they can be excellent and conscientious parents. It is preferable not to facilitate the breeding with birds which have less than two and a half or three years old. There are better chance of success, if you expect them to be at least three years old. The nest box, which can stay at a height of approximately five feet, in a sheltered place (for example, in the night shelter) may be made of rigid timber. Must have a floor area of 25 x 25 cm and a minimum height of 60 cm, with an entrance hole of 7 cm or so. On average, they lay between three and six eggs that are sometimes shocked by the female alone and sometimes by both parents. The offspring are born after 22 or 24 days. The offspring are fed by both parents and the plume emerges at the end of eight weeks or so. Even if a second pregnancy happens meanwhile, as sometimes it does, there is no need to remove the pups from of the first one to take place.
Diet:
Ringnecks are very easy birds to feed, as they like a wide variety of fruits and vegetables and will eat almost anything that is offered to them.
Must be served daily:
1) portion of food for Megazoo (see details below).
2) basic mixture of seeds, for example: 10% sunflower, 10% oats, 20% canary seed, 20% millet, 20% of senha, 10% rice leg, 5% niger and 5% of flaxseed.
3) as a complement give a good variety of fruits and vegetables like corn, eggplant, eggplants, peppers, squash, carrots, beets, cucumber, tomato, apple, papaya, mango, guava, kale, endive, cabbage, etc..
The use of poultry feed is essential because it ensures a much more balanced diet, richer in nutrients than a mixture of seeds. Currently there are several brands on the market and after experiencing some, we chose Megazoo because it is extremely reliable and meets all the needs of birds in all stages. For years, we used the whole Megazoo line of food for birds with very success. The I-20 is used to feed the pups in the beak when removed from the nest. For the maintenance of adult birds, we used the MM-15 and AM-16 and during the breeding season the MR-20 and AR-20.
The offspring whose parents have a rich and varied diet are always more robust, strong and with more vivid and bright colors (photo below). During the weaning process, which starts two weeks after leaving the nest, the pups begin to eat the food quickly and this is the best time to get used to it.
Adults may be reluctant to try at first and there is why the adjustment should be done carefully and slowly.
Protein is especially important during the breeding and moulting, and their levels should be increased at this time. To this one may serve:
a) 1 whole cooked egg for couple, one time per week
b) mixture of egg + Megazoo + fruits + vegetables (chopped)
c) cooked chicken bone (protein and mineral), cooked rice
The amount of calcium in the body of the animal is extremely important, especially in the females, not only in egg production (for the formation of shell) but also at the time of posture, in the contraction of muscles for the passage of the egg from the oviduct to the womb to be layed.
Germinated seed as a supplement is readily accepted by Rose-ringed Parakeet.
Clean, fresh water should always be available to the birds.
