DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE SEXES:

Point out the differences between male and female is easy. The females of these species are often paler and sometimes have the head and beak smaller. Moreover, body size is smaller, besides the main feature that gives it its name (red rumped) the red back of males.

SOCIAL CHARACTERISTICS:

It is advisable to create these birds in pairs. Males, especially, can be very intolerant and attack each other up through the railing if given the chance. It is not advisable to create these birds along with other species of parakeets. These birds get along relatively well with other species of birds provided that they are not too timid or there is enough storage space.

ADEQUATE HOUSING::

Preferably, these birds must be raised in a nursery that has at least 1 meter in length and at least 50 cm wide. Sometimes, we breed isolated birds in indoor cages, but the bird must be able to stretch their wings out of the cage regularly. Animals like to chew so you should not put plants in the nursery.

TEMPERATURE:

These birds are very resistant to winter months and require no warming as long as they have access to night shelter to protect them from frost.

FOOD:

Can be fed with a mixture of seeds and feed for large parakeets with a supplement of small amounts of fruits and green foods. You should always have a mixture of sand.

ACTIVITIES:

These parakeets, one of the most attractive species that is known, are not very noisy when they get scared. They can also produce a variety of sounds that are pleasing to the ear. They are very active birds who like to take baths in the hot days. If the birds are raised indoors should take showers daily using a spray bottle for plants. If you have a careful treatment, the young birds can grow to become very tame. They will occupy all areas of the nursery, but spend a lot of time on the ground , which they scratch for food.

BREEDING:

Breeding of these birds is usually a task very objective, as long as the couple has a good reciprocal relationship and is at least one year old when it has the first laying. An adequate nest box has on the base level an area of approximately 20 square centimeters, and a height of approximately 40 cm. The male courts by showing itself, while observing this behavior, you must watch to see if the female reacts to his advances. If she does not react is preferable to keep the female separated, only with eye contact. If you do not, there is good chance that the male begins to act aggressive towards the female, what can bring serious consequences. The female lays on average five eggs, which incubate for 19 to 21 days. During the first days after the offspring is born, they are fed by the female. When they are a little older, the male also helps. The plumage arises when the offsping is two weeks of life, being fed and treated by its parents for a few more weeks, until it can take care of itself. It can take about six months until the birds acquire their full plumage, although in the nest both sexes can be perfectly identifiable due to the evident dimorphism. The red rumped are known for being the best adoptive parents, not hesitating to hatch and take care of other similar budgerigars.
