Identification:

The diamond doves are one of the most peaceful species of turtledoves. Can be breed in a mixed aviary (indoors) without any problems. Also exhibit exemplary behavior with other smaller birds. During the period of gestation, the males of this species of turtledoves can sometimes fight among themselves.

Habitat:

The diamond doves may well be breed both in an aviary outdoors and indoors. As the birds do not climb, it's more important that cages are large than too high. This species of turtledoves is very robust. However, in extreme weather, birds must be removed to a well ventilated night shelter that protect them from frost.

Breeding:

This species can either be breed in an aviary or in a breeding cage. You can hang nest boxes in various parts of the aviary; these boxes must be at least 12 x 12 cm and with a height of approximately 5 cm. These birds prefer nest boxes in an wireframe or semi-open boxes. The nest is made of all types of material such as hay and branches. Before, during and after the time of pregnancy, birds have an increased need for food based on eggs. The diamond doves lay two eggs. The parents split the responsibility for incubating the eggs, which lasts approximately twelve to thirteen days. During the first days of life, the female feeds the young pigeon's milk. The male also collaborates. The plumage begins to emerge between the 12 and 14 day of life. The birds are not yet ready to look after themselves adequately, continuing for some time to be fed and reared by both parents. A good breeder pair, being in good physical condition, can raise two to three litters a year.

Food:

You can provide to these birds a power base of seed mixture for small tropical birds. In addition, from time to time, you may give them vegetables, and Italian millet and sprouted seeds. You should always give these birds a large supply of sandstone, so that they can ingest the quantities required. The diamond doves drink relatively little.
